Venturing into the Malaysian Immigration Department

I’m going to the Malaysian Immigration Department tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 February 2004, to attempt renewing my passport which will soon expire.

Malaysian government offices are renowned for their (lack of) service and their utter (in)efficiency. We have all heard many a nightmare story of various departments at work, at all times of the year, floundering for various reasons. Popular myths or factual accounts?

I propose to document my experience at the Immigration Department tomorrow via moblogging. While it will not result in a conclusive verdict on the state of the Department, my action-by-action on-site reporting would
hopefully serve as a interesting personal account of one man’s journey into the big morass of Malaysian bureaucracy from which we would either be
celebrating or deploring…

STAY TUNED!

  1. I must say, my dealings with the Immigration Dept have been excellent and hassle free (to be honest, this was 5 years ago, when I applied for my chip-based passport). I went at 2pm, and was out by 3pm. This was the Pusat Bandar Damansara immigration department.

Don’t know if it still applies today.

  2. I was in Ipoh when I did me passport last year. Sweet. 2 days later, the passport was ready. Good luck, and keep us updated!

  3. go early. go REAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL early. but u’d end up going back late. the numbering system is the thing that puts one off. immigration only processes numbers given out during a certain time period which is usually in the morning.

  4. Recent encounter at NRD showed that mykad process had improved and the wait was bearable, but the number queue was questionable.

I should think Immigration had also improved somewhat, since the new PM eyed the service counters.

  5. I am actually very impressed with the immigration department in Penang. My passport expired. I went to renew it the day I found out. I was in and out in 10 minutes. Waiting period was one week and i collected my new shiny passport in 15 minutes since it was a weekend. nothing much. They were very helpful and very nicesince I was alone there for the first time! Very efficient I must say. Good luck with yours!

  6. yep like natasha, i find the penang immigration office to be efficient.

i have yet to made mykad. i hear though stories of long queues in the IC dept. natasha, you made mykad already? apa macam?

jikon, wish you all the best in your passport renewing, and i certainly do want to hear minute by minute account of how it goes. :)

  7. mykad? ahah! that is the one thing with lots of room for improvement. they don’t open all the booths even when they know the whole place is swarming with people.

i went to the one in bayan lepas thinking it was going to be empty. i was wrong. but they gave those who have lost their ic priority. so next time.. lose your ic and you can get it done pretty fast :D

  8. I went to immigration for renew my passport last year.I thought i have to wait in the long queue. It took me 30 minute to get apply and i got my passport after 3 days.Immigration has improving a lot and has good system and good service.Well Done!
