What does it take to sustain a relationship?

Buy me a rose, call me from work
Open a door for me, what would it hurt
Show me you love me by the look in your eyes
These are the little things I need the most in my life
- lyrics from the song “Buy Me a Rose”

What does it take to sustain a relationship?

Is it passion, because surely it is sexual chemistry that distinguishes a relationship from a friendship?

Is it sharing the same values, such that honesty, commitment, money etc. mean the same to both you and me?

Is it sharing the same cultural references, that I don’t have to explain why “The Sound of Music” is a gay icon or who Machiavelli was?

Is it having the same sense of humour, such that we laugh with, and not at, each other?

Is it being able to travel well together, because the greatest tension and pressures come when travelling?

Is it companionship, the ability to just be in each other’s company and not feel compelled to have to do anything?

Is it romance and the little things in life?

Is it love, or is love alone not enough?

Or is it like all things in life where the answer lies in all and none of the above?
