a new mohair scarf!

I knitted a new scarf over the last two days. I bought a ball of Cleckheaton’s Studio yarn in colour #23 from Lincraft a couple of weeks ago and thought I’d make a scarf out of it as a practice and test for an upcoming knitting project.

The yarn is made from 50% mohair and 50% acrylic. I love the texture of mohair - it’s so soft and light on your skin. The scarf feels so luxurious. I used one whole ball for the scarf and it turned out to be almost 2 metres long.

However, I’m not sure I like the colour of this scarf. The yarn was dyed a mixture of olive, light green, dark brown and an orange-y brown which resulted in these alternate strips of colour as it was knitted. I’m quite happy with how the pattern of the scarf turned out, I’m just not too keen on the colour. I’m not really a fan of orange (it makes me slightly sick…) and I didn’t know it would show up so prominently in the finished product. I only bought the yarn because it was on sale at a very, very err.. good price.

What shall I do with it…??

Note on pattern: I cast on 18 stitches and knitted it using only the garter-stitch with a pair of 12 mm needles. After every 10 rows, I added a yarn-over (yo) after every knit-stitch - these were released on the following row in order to get the extra long loops. I think the scarf would look more “dainty” if it was done in stocking-stitches. That’s the next thing to try with a ball of “nicer” coloured yarn!

p/s yes. i am obssessed with knitting at the moment…

  1. give it to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Sell it to a hippie.

  3. Give it to someone as a present? At least you won’t have to shop around for gifts. :)
Btw, how cheap are the yarns there? Am planning to start a knitting project soon but haven’t had time to drop by the yarn store in Singapore. T_T

  4. I love orange. The colour.

    Hate the fruit.

  5. You go to Singapore to buy yarn?!? Please don’t tell me we can’t get yarn in KL… *gasp*

I honestly can’t tell you what the price levels are around here as I’ve never bought yarn anywhere else in the world. The Cleckheaton mohair was retailing at about AUD5.50 a ball but went down to about AUD3.50 during the clearance sale (which is on-going…!!!!)

You can get some really cheap wool yarn for about AUD2 a ball. The nicer ones, i.e. softer or nicer texture, would cost more, up to twice, three times that much. The price of novelty yarn varies.

I’m about to buy some knitting tools/accessories from an online store in the US - it’s cheaper than shopping here in Oz and the variety is wider! I’ll blog about it tomorrow!

  6. Nice what! Complain what? My only question would be if a scarf like that is warm enough. It seems rather light and… insubstantial, for lack of a better word. Maybe an autumn scarf, eh? Or does a mohair/acrylic blend trap warmth differently?

  7. Jay: i’m quite sure that this scarf would be perfect for Spring and Autumn. It’s probably OK for the Australian Winter as well - since it’s never really very cold here. As it’s 2 metres long, it could always be wrapped several times around your neck and as mohair is sort of “fluffy” air would get trapped within the scarf - remember it’s trapped air that provides you the warmth, not the cloth - so it could well be quite warm. Give it a go - it’s cheap (only one ball - ooo.. that sounds bad…), fast to knit (because of the large needle) and easy too (simple pattern).

  8. Well, novelty yarn here is limited and most of the time, they go from RM40-50 per ball (sometimes up to RM80). O_O! And I rarely get feathery, or even loopy-looking yarn here - they just aren’t available. T_T We get the not-so pretty ‘designs’ here.

There is a Lincraft (or something similar) in Singapore which has the same range as the stores in Australia and for a cheaper price - at SGD14 (I think) for a ball of mohair multicoloured yarn and less for other material/textures/patterns. I actually prefer to shop there for yarn simply because after conversion, it’s still cheaper to get them there.

I’ve bought yarn before from US online stores - elann.com has some pretty good ones but where are you getting your stuff from?

  9. Mei: Ouch! That’s very expensive. Even at SGD14! Yarn rarely cost more than AUD8 a ball here and that’s on the very high end for novelty yarn. I’ve only ever bought yarn that cost AUD12 a ball and that’s only because it was a bulky woolen yarn imported from Spain and it’s extra long. What yarn are they selling in Malaysia - wool or nylon? Synthetic shouldn’t cost that much - and isn’t it too hot in Malaysia for wool?

The shop in Singapore is Spotlight - so I was told… I’ve not shopped online yet but I will do so this afternoon, but I’m only buying needles and such, not yarn, from http://www.showersofflowers.com. I’ve read good comments about elann.com from a Yahoo Group (KnitList) - if you join this list beware, they’re crazy! You get a gazillion messages a day!

  10. They sell a mixture of wool, cotton and synthetic mixtures but if I’m not mistaken, most of them come from Hong Kong and other parts of Asia but never from Australia or Europe. T_T

NOOOOOOOO groups from Yahoo for me. I joined one a long time ago and my mailbox was never less than 50%. Gack gack…and have fun ya!

Oh, btw, if you’re buying stuff online, beware - sometimes the colours WILL be off so be a bit careful when choosing colours/patterns and even textures.
